On this day in 1865, the United States adopted the Thirteenth Amendment, abolishing slavery and servitude except as punishment for a crime.

To learn more about the 13th Amendment, try the following resources:
  • 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (Library of Congress)
  • 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (Our Documents)
  • America's Reconstruction (Digital History)
  • Freedom from Slavery Timeline (Annenberg Classroom)
  • The Creation of the 13th Amendment (Harper's Weekly)
  • The Thirteenth Amendment: Abolishing Slavery (University of Missouri)
